Stages of AbsorptionThe Second Stage: Candidate Absorption ("niklat/et")This stage lasts from a minimum of six months to a year or more. During this period, the candidate becomes more involved in the Kibbutz. After checking out a few work branches, s/he join a staff and begin to learn the work and take responsibility. Candidates are encouraged at this stage to take part in various committee meetings and in General Meetings. Those who come to Lotan with professions are assisted in finding work that is fulfilling and appropriate. Those who work off the kibbutz are asked to make an extra effort to take part in the evening activities and meetings (see committees). Candidates can observe and join committees that deal with aspects that interest them. Furthermore, candidates who are here at the same time meet as a group to go through an educational process of acquainting themselves with the kibbutz and its ideology. For example, there are discussions about Judaism, community, Zionism, ecology etc. The group meets with the business manager for an explanation of the yearly budget and economic plan at a relaxed and intimate pace. Other subjects may be explained in this manner before they come up to general meeting. Sometime within the next year, candidates will come before the General Meeting again to be accepted for the third and final stage of candidate membership. The framework of the meeting is similar to the first, but it is, in all aspects, on a much deeper level. Members and candidates now know each other well and the discussion focuses on specific questions and issues. This is a very important stage, for it is the last time (in almost all cases) that members will have the opportunity to vote on candidates. |
