Reform Zionism: Twenty Years: An Educator's Perspective
by Michael Livni (Langer)
Among the controversial questions on which Livni takes a stand are:
Can the Progressive Jewish (Reform) movement in Israel be based
on the Diaspora model? How can we establish a democratic basis for
Israel Diaspora relations? How do we differentiate between Zionism
and pro-Israelism--especially in our educational endeavor? Michael
Livni is a Zionist educator. He sees Reform Zionism as an educational
movement--for youth and adults alike. Livni is not just a theoretician--his
personal involvement over a period of twenty years imparts a unique
cogency to his message.
Editorial Review
Rabbi Eric. H. Yoffie, President UAHC
This collection of essays and articles provides a rare insight into
classical Zionist thought as it dialectically intersects and synthesizes
with its onetime adversary, Reform Judaism. The reader has a rare
opportunity to be challenged and enlightened by meeting a gifted
and seminal thinker and an effective doer.

From the Foreword by Rabbi Henry F. Skirball: The struggle of
the non-Orthodox streams of Judaism for legitimacy in the State
of Israel has received considerable publicity. However, the issues
that have arisen within the non-Orthodox Movements with regards
to their adaptation to the Israeli reality have received less coverage.
In this volume, Michael Livni continues to challenge and prod and
to present his ideas in a passionate and energetic way so that others
will have the opportunity to consider them and be stimulated to
thought and action...Michael Livni is a Zionist educator. He sees
Reform Zionism as an educational movement - for youth and adults
alike. Since the early 1970s, he has actively and energetically
explored the interface between Reform Judaism and Zionism and probably
spends more time than anyone in the Reform Movement today thinking
creatively about the meaning of Reform Zionism.
