Tires & Trash , Recycling at its best at Lotan

Decorative walls filled with tires surrounding Lotan's Kindy GardenAmong the original and creative building methods Lotan has developed is the use of recycled materials, mud, and tires to craft benches, raised gardens, playgrounds, and bustops around the kibbutz and the Center for Creative Ecology.

Lotan slowly became recognized as a collection center for used tires. Initially, randomly discarded tires were collected from the roads around the kibbutz; the next phase saw collection from other kibbutz garages in the vicinity; the regional council (municipality) became a collection source; and finally the City of Eilat began to bring its used tires to Lotan.

The tires form the foundation for these unique and imaginative projects.

Captain CompostThe following phase is filling the tires with "recyclables" from the kibbutz recycling center, creatively "disposing" with the materials inside the walls and benches.

The final phase is applying a mud coating that seals and finishes the projects. The mud comes from either dry riverbeds surrounding the kibbutz, or "waste debris" from drilling deep-water wells.

All these projects are the result of latent creativity of kibbutz members and visiting youth, family, and community groups from Israel and around the world working joyously to provide inspired solutions to environmental challenges. Join us for a tour , workshop or a relaxing break in our desert oasis.
