Tires & Trash , Recycling at its best at Lotan
Lotan slowly became recognized as a collection center for used tires. Initially, randomly discarded tires were collected from the roads around the kibbutz; the next phase saw collection from other kibbutz garages in the vicinity; the regional council (municipality) became a collection source; and finally the City of Eilat began to bring its used tires to Lotan. The tires form the foundation for these unique and imaginative projects. The final phase is applying a mud coating that seals and finishes the projects. The mud comes from either dry riverbeds surrounding the kibbutz, or "waste debris" from drilling deep-water wells. All these projects are the result of latent creativity of kibbutz members and visiting youth, family, and community groups from Israel and around the world working joyously to provide inspired solutions to environmental challenges.
