Eco-update January 2005

Shalom to everyone,

January is upon us and much needs to be done but it's cold in the morning and it's even been raining in our area; strange but true. The locust came and went, luckily not too much damage in the organic garden. The bird reserve did get quite a visit but everything is fine.

This month Michael and Brenda got married, it was a happy occasion with the rare singing talents of Alex, Mark, Shachar and Myself singing what is destined to become a classic “Tzioni Reformi” (Reform Zionist) to the tune of Let It Be by the Beatles. Maybe we could sell the CD version to raise money for our educational programs? Anyway mazal tov to all concerned

The new Green Apprenticeship is well underway with Dana from Canada, and Dina, Ariel, and Scott from the U.S.A. Together with Itimar from Holland and 3 shin shinim* from Israel - Boaz, Adi and Chico, All together we make up quite a team.

We have just finished the first stage of upgrading the bird reserve with funds from the Jewish National Fund. We improved two of the observation shelters, the alfalfa field, irrigation system, made new pathways, and fitted a new solar water pump. We are now waiting for the spring migration to start so that birds and the rest of us can enjoy the improvements. (Special thanks to Julia, Kfir, Itamar, Gidon, Adam, Udi, Boaz, Chico and everyone else who helped with the upgrading- todah rabah)

In November and December Alex and I taught the “Magic of Building with Earth” workshop, its been slowly developing more and more into a highly intensive, practical workshop that helps people to start to build with mud.We are both happy and proud with the feedback from the workshops.

That’s all for now, we hope to see you soon, yours Mike Kaplin.

* Shin Shin - The acronym of Shnat Sherout or a year of service. A shinshin is a youth who chooses to spend a year in the service of the community at large prior to starting his or hers military service.
