What is Nutritional Herbalism?

INTERACT

Nutritional Herbology is as old as healing itself and as new as the latest discoveries in biochemical sciences. Whilst terms such as naturopathy, herbal medicine, phytotherapy have recently become fashionable, the basic philosophy and many of the methods go back to ancient times, some dating back thousands of years.

Nutritional Herbalism is a distinctively natural approach to health and healing that recognizes the integrity of the whole person - an art, science, philosophy and practice of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of illness. It is the combination of nature's healing power with scientific methods that makes it an important system of medicine for today's health care.

Nutritional Herbalism integrates the use of diet, herbs and lifestyle changes that enable restoration of the body and it's immune system as a primary intervention treatment for specific conditions as well as for disease prevention. The diagnosis, nutritional programme and herbal prescription is an individualised process, taking into account not only a person's illness or condition, but also their lifestyle.

Nutritional Herbalism main principles

  • To harness and channel the healing power of nature. The body has an inherent ability to continually seek its way back to health and we only need to help it along its way.
  • “First do no harm.” No material is used that is poisonous, toxic or habit-forming.
  • Find the cause of the condition. No two people ever succumb to the same illness for the same reasons. Therefore no two people can ever restore their health in an identical way.
  • Treating the whole person. The boundaries separating body, mind and spirit are a recent allopathic invention with no scientific basis.
  • Taking back the responsibility: The ability to heal and reach our full potential lies only in our own hands. The Greek origin of the word “doctor” is “teacher”.
  • Preventative medicine: It is better to start digging a well as soon as we begin to experience thirst, rather than when we are already weakened by dehydration (Trad. Chinese Proverb).
